This was probably the first film I saw Anna Paquin, and she shone here as a bereaved young teen who connects with her estranged dad by rescuing a flock of orphaned geese. The music was great too and perfectly matched the mood of the film in both its quiet, reflective moments and the lighter moments as well. "10,000 Miles" sets off the film wonderfully and is especially poignant at the climax when the girl is making the final flight solo and probably thinking of her mother.

I love this film, too! It is great family fare. They don't make many films like this anymore. Plus, it is based on a true story, which makes it even more satisfying.

Yeah, I always get a little emotional at the end! Wish they made these kinds of films more often too.

It's a shame director Carroll Ballard has seemingly retired as his 'kids and animals' films are all rather charming. Do check out The Black Stallion and Duma, if you haven't already.

I like animal movies. Try Seal Morning, an old BBC movie from the 80's. Or Heichi, a dog movie with Richard Gere.
The Black Stallion is a masterpiece. Coppolla produced it. Between this and Apocalypse Now, I think he burned himself out.

I remember Seal Morning, which was broadcast in several episodes when I was a kid. Really enjoyed it.
The first half of The Black Stallion - the sequences on the island - is flat-out wonderful. Some of the most magical kids' filmmaking ever, and breathtakingly shot to boot. I do feel that once they are back in civilisation, the magic drains away rapidly... but it's a good one all the same.

I think I've seen The Black Stallion, but it was so long ago. I should watch it again.
