Really?! This got the best picture Oscar over The Big Chill?
It's tedious and without any atmosphere and has a decidedly TV aesthetic... Whereas The Big Chill is iconic...
The music is horrible and overbearing... the movie supposedly spans multiple decades yet none of the characters age and they dress pretty much the same... nearly all actors overacting in practically every scene...
Shirley MacLaine was horrible in this... Even more overrated than usual...
The movie's saving grace is Nicholson... and to some extent Debra Winger earlier in the movie, but then her performance goes to shit too...

It may seen surprising today but Terms of Endearment was the big, critically raved end of year prestige picture of 1983. From what I understand its win was widely expected and it also did well with critics' awards that year.
I don't think The Big Chill was ever a contender to win.
My favourite film of the year, which was of course entirely overlooked, is Local Hero. Of those which the Oscars took note of, Fanny and Alexander and The Right Stuff were much better.
Terms is certainly not Oscar worthy, but its enjoyable enough and very well acted. I certainly think its a step up from the previous couple of dreary winners, Chariots of Fire and Gandhi.
