It's original title was just Star Wars ,I would know since I was around when the first movie premiered and on the 2006 SE double DVD (which I own)on the DVD that contains the original theatrical cut of the movie there is no mentioning of A New Hope in the openings crawl(and Han shot first).

That's what I said the Episode IV A New Hope was added to the title crawl after the release of The Empire Strikes Back in 1980

Can't wait to see the next Lucas revision where he adds to the opening titles: "Episode IV of 9! So preorder them all! ...or is it 11 counting A Star Wars Story & Solo, idek. Doesn't matter I'll just change it in another 40 years."
