Discuter de A Night to Remember

After reading the book, I didn't know that the guy who was drinking alcohol near Rose during the sinking in 1997's Titanic was based on a real person. So far one my favourite survivor stories which were showed in this film.

  • brought bread for the lifeboats
  • was assigned to a lifeboat but gave up seat
  • basically drunk during the ordeal, drank alcohol in his cabin
  • threw around 50 deck chairs so people can use it later as flotation (by this time he was probably feeling hot with alcohol & workout)
  • described the final sinking as riding an elevator going down, claimed that his hair didn't even get wet!
  • after sinking, only managed to join collapsible boat with Officer Lightoller after 2 hours. So he was just swimming in cold water before that, said he didn't feel that cold thanks to the alcohol he drank
  • since the collapsible boat couldn't fit him, he just held the hand of a cook who recognised him, so his legs still in the water until they were able to join another lifeboat (though here he replaced a guy who died)

Very interesting story, there should be an alcohol drink named after him

My favourite telling of the Titanic story by far. I really admire how it is shot in documentary fashion and seems to be in real-time. I remember the baker from A Night to Remember and being fascinated when I later learnt more about his survival story - truth be told I don't recall him appearing in Cameron's film. It does seem looking back that Rose somehow managed to interact with many of the best-known players in the real-life story.

Yeah, Rose dined with all the popular people in first class - Captain, Mr Andrews, she even insulted Ismay! joy

The baker's role in Cameron's Titanic was little compared to this one, I just remember him as the random guy drinking in his flask beside Jack & Rose. He has a deleted scene where he was throwing the chairs. Actually a lot of deleted scenes in the 1997 film were good and more factual like Astor hanging out in the gym, showing his wife the inside of life jacket while waiting for the lifeboats or the wireless scene with closest ship Californian.

I was also interested in Jack Thayer's story and his short term friendship with Milton...didn't make it in this film. Hope there will be a film like this one, more on real people - combined with the details of 1997 film like the set and of course special effects of the sinking, breaking in half. And would love to see more Carpathia scenes like how they prepared to rescue survivors and some point of view of passengers who didn't know why they changed direction. Especially the Carpathia passenger one who had nieces at Titanic and was surprised when a crew told him that his niece was there.

Here is a transcript of his official testimony. If accurate then it suggests some mild liberties were taken by the director, but overall the character was worthwhile and helped break up the unspeakable awfulness of other events in the film.
