Overblik

Andenrangsforfatteren Holly Martins kommer til Wien umiddelbart efter anden verdenskrig, hvor han er blevet lovet et job af sin gamle ven Harry Lime. Ved ankomsten får han at vide at Lime er død, og at han var en svindler og morder. Martins er først oprørt over anklagen, men finder snart ud af, at vennen afgjort var kriminel, men også at han ikke er død. Herefter venter den endelige konfrontation mellem den retskafne Martins og hans tidligere ven.
