I read a version of the script which ends, quite appropriately, with Brian pulling the trigger. Perfect end - he finally understood what it was to be a killer (albeit in self-defence), but it seems the studio wanted something more positive, so we're at a luxury beach house with Brian and Carrie heading off to lunch. I guess his book sold really well, but I wonder if Carrie really would have stayed with him. He didn't listen to her constant warnings about Early until pretty late in the day, and when he finally did it unleashed hell, including Carrie getting raped. I can't see her forgiving Brian, even after his heroic rescue attempt.
