cellar or at least in that storage space under the staircase? I know they show pretty much everything you should not do, but this seemed very obvious palce to hide even for someone with zero knowledge compared to building that inside shelter which was completely open without wall

Ah, another "survival expert" who doesn't realize that unless you can hermetically seal yourself in a space with edible food and clean water, the "dust of death" will kill you. Better to have a gun with at least two bullets loaded to "end your nuclear torment."
