I do agree it is a great movie but it so different to top gun i don't even compare them. The first half is almost a spy thriller and what i really like is in that half Eastwood is completely out of his depth.
He is stressed, terrified and almost completely reliant on the spy network. He isn't like current day heroes like bond or hunt who are good at everything.
Once he gets in the Firefox it turns into a tense action film and Eastwood's character is in his element and clearly calmer and more confident.
Top Gun has better aerial battles and is more of a straight action movie.
I personally love both.
