bluersun--
Yeah, the acting is terrible all-around.
But that Valerie Kaprisky-- yow wow!
And I also liked the Philip Glass music (the tune played while Kaprisky is swimming, and also when she is sitting alone in contemplation in her apartment; also a snippet at the end, I think). It actually motivated me to purchase his "Glassworks" album.

@northcoast I've found a few pieces I liked, but on listening to 'Opening' which I think is the music used in Breathless I hoped it would feature the sweeping violins that follows, but they appear to be two entirely different pieces by different artists... Unless you know different...?

bluersun--
So I've just taken my "Glassworks" CD (2003, music originally recorded in 1982) off the shelf and given it a listen. And you are indeed right. The first track, "Opening", more than six minutes long, is the same song used in the film (at least to my amateur ear) except there are no violins at the end. So I'm guessing the violin bit was something added to the film by the director, Jim McBride.
Sorry.
Just FYI, there is another track (number six) on the album, "Closing", which is another six minutes (5:56, to be precise), very similar to "Opening", but again, no violin.
When I still owned a copy of Breathless, sometimes I would play "Opening" on my stereo system, syncing it up to the scene where Valerie Kaprisky is sitting alone in her chair (where the same song plays); it added quite an effect to the viewing experience.
I've just checked Amazon, and the Glassworks CD is still available (at least on the U.S. website).
But if you want the violins-- no dice.

Thanks for your reply, I guess we'll never know then... And of course thanks for your suggestions - I've saved the 'Glassworks' album to my Spotify account, I've got a 6 hour motorway drive on Sunday so that'll help pass some of it - cheers!
