12岁的男孩埃米尔和他的父亲生活在一起。由于父亲失业，家中生活困难，在埃米尔过生日的时候，父亲都舍不得买电影票带他去看电影。但是每次生日母亲给他寄的500马克父亲总会给他存好，如今，埃米尔已经有1500马克了。

Dvanáctiletému Emilovi a jeho tátovi se lepí smůla na paty. Nejdřív od nich odejde matka, otec ztratí práci a aby toho nebylo málo, po autonehodě přijde nejen o kus zdraví, ale i o řidičský průkaz. Aby si Emil odpočinul od všech těch pohrom, má dovoleno strávit pár dní u známé v Berlíně. Emil cestou narazí na pochybného muže, který ho uspí a ukradne mu úspory. Emil ale v průšvihu nezůstane sám. Seznámí se s drzou Pony a jejím dětským gangem a společně se snaží dopadnout gangstera, z něhož se vyklubal hotelový zloděj.

The twelve-year-old Emil and his father are haunted by bad luck. To take a break from a series of family disasters, Emil is allowed to spend a few days with a friend of the family, the female priest Hummel in Berlin. In the train he runs across the slick Max Grundeis who anaesthetizes Emil and steals his savings of 1500 DM. When he finally arrives in Berlin, Emil and a gang of street kids, led by the cheeky girl Pony Hütchen, try to find the gangster, who haunts the posh Hotel Adlon as a hotel thief. Meanwhile, to prevent anyone from finding out about Emil's mishap, Gypsi, a member of the gang of kids, passes himself off as Emil, thus wreaking havoc on the home of the priest.

Da sein alleinerziehender Vater nach einem Autounfall im Krankenhaus liegt, wird der zwölfjährige Emil Tischbein aus der ostdeutschen Provinz nach Berlin geschickt. Dort soll er mit Pastorin Hummel und deren Sohn zwei Wochen seiner Ferien verbringen. Im Zug stiehlt ihm der zwielichtige Gauner Max Grundeis all seine Ersparnisse. Emil nimmt die Verfolgung auf und lernt dabei Pony Hütchen, die Chefin einer Berliner Kinderbande, kennen. Die beschließt kurzerhand, dem Jungen zu helfen.

החיים לא האירו פנים לאמיל: אמו עזבה לקנדה, אביו פוטר מעבודתו, והמצב הכלכלי גרוע. כשסוף סוף מצא עבודה, נפגע האב בתאונת דרכים ואיבד את רשיון הנהיגה שלו, שבלעדיו לא יוכל לעבוד.

Emil es un niño que viaja a Berlín para visitar a su abuela, pero en el tren un hombre le roba el dinero mientras Emil duerme. Cuando despierta, ve al tipo alejarse entre la gente de la estación, y en la capital alemana, Emil contará con la ayuda de unos detectives para dar con el ladrón.
