I finally got round to watching this and one of the first things that struck me was how it felt like it could have been set in the same universe as 'Alien' and possibly 'Blade Runner' with it's grimey near future look, the music and general atmosphere... Anyway, absolutely loved this reinvention of 'High Noon' 8/10

Yeah. Same here. Connery is just excellent too. I'm surprised that this one isn't loved -- even panned by critics at the time of release.

I totally agree that Outland fits right with the Alien & Blade Runner feel of that scifi period. Peter Hyams (Outland) and Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner) seemed to be mutually inspired by each other, and by Kubrick, with their heavy approach to scifi. Another flick/director worth mentioning in the same breath is Star Trek the Motion Picture (Robert Wise)... very dark and unsettling.

I think Jodorowsky's Dune mentions that a lot of the art, story boards were used by other films in the years proceeding Dune not being made in 75. Alien and Blade Runner are mentioned so I don't think it's a stretch that possibly Outland was also influenced. I should see who did the special effects.
