I used The Class in my 2009 list. I think Wikipedia might be telling some fibs about release dates. Although release dates are gonna be different in different countries.

I go with the lazy route of simply picking the date listed on IMDb, even if that is only a festival showing. The Class was released in France in 2008 and won the 2008 Palm d'Or, so for me it qualifies for that year.
I start my lists by using Box Office Mojo and crosscheck with IMDb. It's hard to know what to go with sometimes. I don't usually use the initial release (this only really counts for films made outside the US) if it only showed at 1-5 festivals in different countries (usually just to qualify for award season). But if it has a 'wide release' in numerous places in its initial year I will use that year. Does any of that make sense? This website even lists the movies that went straight to video: https://www.the-numbers.com/movies/year/2008
I don't worry too much about release dates now. Especially has we're now in the 90's and 80s and release windows between the US and the UK (where I'm from) are a lot greater. So it's completely impossible to get it right. A year of film for you is probably completely different from a year for me.

I added Control to my list. For some reason Wikipedia neglected to mention it's release this year.

Control was released in 2007, at least in the UK and Europe but I think it also had some American screenings in that year.

I'm gonna pretend it was released in 2008 because I really don't want Kung Fu Panda in my top 10. And Besides, the back of my DVD says 2008.
