Maybe its a different version? We only store info about the original version. No different cuts.

The "original" cut of the film was 155 minutes, shown initially at Cannes, but this was cut down by Tati to 124 minutes. The 155 minute version only exists, as far as I know, in Paris. Most prints are the 124 minute version that Tati himself cut, and for the average consumer/film-goer, the 124 minute version is the only one they will ever see or have access to. It is the only cut available on DVD/Blu-ray.

The 93 minute version is a butchered cut by U.S. distributors. It is in no way official.

Point being: if you want to adhere strictly to "original version," that would be 155 minutes. As a practical resource, TMDB should list 124 minutes, because that is the length of the film as it is widely available. Either way, it should not be 93 minutes.

@alltimemarr there are different runtimes for all languages listed here, in german the runtime here is 124, french 126, english 93

The English ("International") version of the film is one Tati himself constructed the soundtrack for. The runtime does not differ from the version with the French soundtrack. It should still be 124 minutes.

Oh yeah, I should've been more clear, with the original I mean the first version for that country (or for English the first English-speaking country that has the release, so for English either USA/AUS/UK/CA for example, unless it's a USA/AUS/UK/CA movie, then that specific country gets dibs) So theatrical, if it never got theatrical or physical release, only then festival. Same practice as with the translated titles! :)

Though if the release is truly "butchered" (scenes removed, scenes added, different script) it is actually another version of the same movie? @lineker @banana Also happened to early Ghibli movies Naäsicaa being a prime example iirc. Later Disney released the "original" version.

Right! It's also like Leone's Once Upon a Time in America, which was cut from its intended 229 minutes to 139 minutes by U.S. distributors. Yes, technically that was its runtime upon release, but no film buff / historian / professor would ever endorse that as an official runtime. I think in special cases like these, where there's clear evidence of studio tampering that has been rectified on all subsequent releases of the film, TMDB should reflect authorial intent.

Oh, I raised this issue last month for a completely different film and forgot about it. I think right now we can only support the first/original version in each language. The Translated English title and the runtime fields should match. (edit: it's not an issue with this movie, but let's imagine the restored version was released under a different title)

It would make sense for the US version to be an alternative version. Hopefully, it is a problem that will easily be fixed with alternative versions. But I wouldn't want to be Travis, it sounds complicated.

edit: @lineker How does it work for adult movies? An entry can't be both adult and softcore? thinking

We only support the original version. In almost all of the cases I have come across the original was porn and then they cut the porn to create a version that could be screened on TV or more easily sold on VHS and later DVD. This was very common for a certain kind of porn comedy in the 1970s. Here the movie is set to adult:true because of the original version. Still, I wonder how that will work when we add support for multiple versions of the same movie. But I'm sure Travis will figure something out! smile_cat

(edit: And it's my opinion that we can be flexible with runtime for the few non-porn classics that may be suffering from this issue.)
