 1960年代初,国内各行各业纷纷向雷锋看齐,苏州一家名叫“得月楼”的餐馆亦不例外,服务员沈师傅(方笑笑)、小顾(顾月娥)等对顾客热情有礼、有求必应。但沈师傅的徒弟杨友生(小杨天笑),却认为“伺候人”很丢脸,经常会不耐烦地冲顾客发脾气,他一心想当“比服务员神气许多的工人”。沈师傅等人将他批评,他答应今后工作时会压一压火气。——餐馆另一位服务员老张(张幻尔)的工作态度,不好不坏介于中间。县商业局王科长(黄影)隐瞒身份来到“得月楼”体验生活,被分到杨友生一组,对于这位新来的同事老王,杨友生颇老道地传授经验:顾客都是臭脾气,若他们发火,万千要往下压。——王科长呵呵一笑,却是处处向沈师傅学习;杨友生火气压来压去,却是冲顾客火冒三丈。同事们劝他要微笑服务,他的近乎定格的夸张笑脸却接二连三吓跑顾客。杨母(丁凤英)认为儿子有了对象便会改掉臭脾气,托邻居悄悄给他介绍了个女孩,哪想女孩曾在“得月楼”吃饭时被他骂过。左不是右也不是令杨友生相当尴尬,他更想成为一名工人,尽管商业局还没批准他调换工作岗位,他已急不可耐地跑去找采茶厂的厂长表决心,没料厂长说起未来他可能的工作,竟不是采茶工人而是餐厅服务员。骑着单车回家的路上,杨友生越想越气,路遇的一大群鹅甚至也成了眼中钉,结果一不小心摔下单车,骨折。之后的看病经历、沈师傅所讲的新旧社会饭馆服务员地位的对比,令杨友生慢慢开始从自己身上找原因,而得知老王原是王科长、小顾原来有个“高官爸爸”时,他更加羞愧。
