Movies I Have Watched Multiple Times and Will Again

I have watched a lot of movies more than once, and some repeatedly such as A Wonderful Life or A Christmas Story, but if they show up on one of my streaming sites, I may not watch it at that moment. But there were movies I enjoy so much I will always watch them if they cross my path. Some because they have witty dialogue, some because of a great story told well, and still others because of great actors or actresses at their absolute best. This is a list of some of those movies.

Fever Pitch I like to think that the books I write have good dialogue and witty characters, but I wouldn’t dream of comparing my creations to the Ben and Lindsay characters in this wonderful film. They have great chemistry, as do her friends (his friends come off a bit clunky and needy sometimes). I could watch the first half-hour or more once a week, I enjoy it so much. This is of course the US. Version, featuring the Boston Red Sox. I couldn’t get into the British book this was based on (substitute soccer for baseball) and the Brit movie based on it with Colin Firth is pretty good, but this version outshines it all the way, I think. There are several romantic comedies that come close, such as Clueless and Book Smart, but Fever Pitch is the reigning champion. So if you are in my living room when this comes on, don’t try to distract me, just ask me where I keep the popcorn.

Passion Fish This is a great drama. I like David Straithairn, who seems remarkably low in the credits on this film. Everyone else is very good also, with excellent writing. And the Cajun music is an awesome bonus, if I am allowed to utilize an overused adjective like awesome.

War of the Worlds I read War of the Worlds when I was growing up, never reading how remarkable it was. H.G. Wells was way ahead of his time in writing sci-fi and stories of the future. I like the special effects of this film version of the story, but also the writing and the acting. I think Tom Cruise has always been underrated: his steady performance in Rain Man helped Dustin Hoffman win that Academy Award. Mind you, I think this would be a much better movie if they removed the basement scenes with Tim Robbins, but that is just an opinion.

Super 8 I have to admit that the scene of the train wreck near the beginning is a magnet for me to watch, so I have seen it much more than the other parts of Suoer 8. But even when we settle done into the main story, it holds my attention without being flamboyant about it. Part sci-fi, part coming of age, it is worth every viewing that comes my way.

Gettysburg The first time I watched this was in the theater and even at four hours I did not get tired or bored of being there. I have always read a lot about the Civil War, but there aren’t many good movies about it. I am from Maine and read the Killer Angels, which the movie is partly based on, and Mainer Joshua Chamberlain figures prominently in the book and therefore this film. The soundtrack music really complements the action, as well as the opening sequence that features pictures of the actors next to the actual soldiers pictures. I guess the movie was criticized for its lack of women characters and persons of color, but with three days of fighting to cover in four hours, more subplots might have been tough to squeeze in. A couple other war movies that stand out (because I am not a big fan of them) area Greyhound and 1917.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World This is one of those great movies that is based on a book I didn’t like much, and I like other books by that author. What impresses me most is how it makes a viewer see up close what living on a warship is like. And I appreciate the portrayals of Doctor Maturin, who is highlighted for his medical functions and interest in botany, whereas the books sometimes seem obsessed with the character’s role as a spy.

Unforgiven There are many westerns I have liked and a few I watched more than once, like a couple of Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns, but Clint Eastward’s Unforgiven mesmerizes me practically, and I will re-watch it no matter where in the film I come into it. Of course, the hero’s ability as a gunfighter is totally unbelievable, but darn, it’s Clint Eastward! Nuff said.

The Day After Tomorrow I was browsing this old list of mine and see that the text I wrote disappeared! So I will just say that I cut Sci-fi movies a lot of slack in realism or maybe even plot if I like the subject. Weather disaster movies are an example. Show me convincing destruction of actual cities and property, and I am there. As it happens, this movie also has a decent set of subplots that make it easier for me to keep watching this for the special effects.

Monsters I have always felt this movie is underrated. Despite what the preview shows, it is a science fiction alien invasion story rather than a big budget, star-filled, special effects laden blockbuster. And even then, it isn’t really an alien invasion movie, as the story tells us that the aliens were brought back by a space probe that broke up while returning to Earth. (Unless the aliens were castaways, I suppose. But in a way they seem like stranded interstellar tourists rather than world conquerors. I have read a couple of examples where they details are inaccurate, such as the location of the Incan ruins (or is it Aztec?) and how these aliens could not have traveled upright, but I don’t let occasional facts ruin a good movie for me. So I wouldn’t change the channel (or streaming service) when Monsters comes on.

Ant-Man and the Wasp I have watched a lot of the superhero movies because I read comic books as a kid. But I wouldn’t say I am a fan. But Ant-Man and the Wasp is as entertaining a movie as I can name. It is witty and fun. Our hero is also a great dad, and the supporting cast completely hold their in keeping the film lively. I would hope for a sequel, but it is a sequel itself. (Later: Okay, they did another sequel, but I didn’t get drawn into it.)

Persuasion In some ways Persuasion is Jane Austen’s most complex novel, and I feel this film is the best adaptation of it. The lead actress is subtle and wonderful in showing her moods and feelings. There are a couple of scenes where she stares straight at the camera without saying a word. How Sally Hawkins stays in character doing that is beyond me, but her silence is just as expressive as several lines of dialogue would be. The last scene where she chases after Captain Wentworth didn’t seem quite realistic: like how did he get so far away when he left the house seconds before her? But that is minor. I would probably watch any of the Austen adaptations from this new century, but I find that Persuasion is utterly riveting.
