Em 1970 o Chile está sob o comando do ditador Augusto Pinochet. No meio desta clima tenso, Lena parte numa busca desesperada pelo seu marido, Daniel. Ele foi capturado e levado para Colonia Dignidad, fundada pelo alemão Paul Schaefer. Lá todos seguem uma seita secreta e é nela que Lena se infiltra para encontrar Daniel.
Em um país da América Latina, durante o período pós-ditadura dos anos 1990, Pauline Escobar (Sigourney Weaver) acaba reconhecendo a voz de um homem (Ben Kingsley) que acredita ter lhe torturado intensamente anos atrás. Por isso, mantém o homem preso e tenta de todas as formas extrair dele uma confissão, enquanto procura conter os traumas que lhe afligem ao relembrar a terrível situação pela qual passou.

O país votaria sim ou não sobre se Pinochet deveria ou não governar por mais oito anos. Os líderes da oposição, juntos pelo não, persuadiram um jovem e impertinente publicitário, René Saavedra, a liderar a sua campanha. Contra todas as expectativas, com escassos recursos e sob o escrutínio dos esbirros do déspota, Saavedra e a sua equipa criaram um plano audacioso para ganhar a eleição e libertar o Chile.
Chile, 1973. Gonzalo Infante (Matías Quer) é um garoto que estuda no Colégio Saint Patrick, o mais conceituado de Santiago. Gonzalo é de uma família de classe alta, morando em um bairro na área nobre da cidade com seus pais e sua irmã. O padre McEnroe (Ernesto Malbran), o diretor do colégio, inspirado no governo de Salvador Allende decide implementar uma política que faça com que alunos pobres também estudem no Saint Patrick. Um deles é Pedro Machuca (Ariel Mateluna) que, assim como os demais, fica deslocado em meio aos antigos alunos da escola. Provocado, Pedro é seguro por trás e um deles manda que Gonzalo o bata, que se recusa a fazer isto e ainda o ajuda a fugir. A partir de então nasce uma amizade entre os dois garotos, apesar do abismo de classe existente entre eles.
