Den 26. november 1956 ankommer Fidel Castro og 80 andre oprørere med båd til Cuba. Blandt disse er den argentinske læge Ernesto 'Che' Guevara, der ligesom Castro drømmer om at styrte diktatoren Fulgencio Batista. Che beviser under de efterfølgende kamphandlinger, at han er en ekspert i guerillakrig. Han stiger hurtigt i graderne i oprørshæren, og snart er han en revolutionshelt blandt de lokale cubanere.
Den cubanske revolutionshelt Che Guevara er både berømt og magtfuld, da han pludselig forsvinder fra øen. Han er nemlig taget til Bolivia for at organisere en revolution sammen med nogle af sine cubanske kammerater. Hans offervilje og idealisme er ikke nok til at sikre, at projektet bliver gennemført med succes, men det er med til efterfølgende at gøre ham til et symbol for heltemod verden over.

Denne gang er emnet den 23-årige medicinstuderende Ernesto "Che" Guevara og hans kammerat Alberto Granados motorcykelrejse gennem Sydamerika i 1950’erne. Manuskriptet bygger på de unges egne dagbøger.

In Cuba, she ends up caught between all fronts: under the watchful eye of the Stasi, which expects results from her, but in reality solely dedicated to Che's revolution, Tamara allows herself to be trained as a double spy by Che's troops. At the same time, her honest love grows for Commandante Ulises, who eventually gives her the choice of following her personal happiness and going into hiding rather than following Che's plans to liberate South America, which by now he considers a suicide mission.
