Film volně navazuje na jeho snímek z roku 1995 Před úsvitem (Before Sunrise). Film je romantickým příběhem o lásce dvou mladých lidí, francouzské studentky Celine a amerického mladíka Jesse. Celine a Jesse se setkali ve vlaku z Budapešti do Vídně a děj filmu se odehrával v průběhu dvanácti hodin, po které trvalo jejich krátké setkání ve Vídni. Snímek končil rozloučením obou hrdinů po jedné společně strávené noci. Celine a Jesse se rozešli se slibem, že se znovu setkají ve Vídni po šesti měsících.

Píše se rok 1944 a německý nadporučík Clemens Forell odjíždí vlakem z Bavorska na východní frontu. Na nádraží se loučí s rodinou a manželka mu přitom sdělí, že čekají další dítě. Forell slibuje, že se do Vánoc vrátí, ale místo toho je jako válečný zajatec v Sovětském svazu odsouzen na 25 let nucených prací v gulagu na nejvýchodnějším cípu Sibiře. Forell je s mnoha dalšími německými zajatci transportován vlakem v nelidských podmínkách na Sibiř a dopraven do gulagu, kde těží v dolech. Již po příchodu do gulagu je konfrontován se zástupcem velitele gulagu. Forell vzpomíná na svoji rodinu a když se mu naskytne příležitost k útěku, využije ji. Byla to však nastražená léčka a Forell i ostatní vězni jsou za to tvrdě potrestáni. Forellovi se však záhy naskytne další příležitost k útěku, a to díky pomoci německého doktora, který zde ošetřuje nemocné a raněné. Pomocí něj se mu útěk podaří a pro Forella tím začíná strastiplná pouť přes celou Sibiř domů.

The earliest surviving celluloid film, and believed to be the second moving picture ever created, was shot by Louis Aimé Augustin Le Prince using the LPCCP Type-1 MkII single-lens camera. It was taken in the garden of Oakwood Grange, the Whitley family house in Roundhay, Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire (UK), possibly on 14 October 1888. The film shows Adolphe Le Prince (Le Prince's son), Mrs. Sarah Whitley (Le Prince's mother-in-law), Joseph Whitley, and Miss Harriet Hartley walking around in circles, laughing to themselves, and staying within the area framed by the camera. The Roundhay Garden Scene was recorded at 12 frames per second and runs for 2.11 seconds.

The last remaining production of Le Prince's LPCC Type-16 (16-lens camera) is part of a gelatine film shot in 32 images/second, and pictures a man walking around a corner. Le Prince, who was in Leeds (UK) at that time, sent these images to his wife in New York City in a letter dated 18 August 1887.

It is night in Warsaw. Two very different homes. In one, a father watches sports lying on the sofa, expecting the son to do the same. In another apartment, a wealthy-looking mother sits at the table to dine with her daughter, completely different from her. At the same time, the boy and the girl embark on a nocturnal adventure of transformation, during which they strip off the various stratifications of gender that they have inherited. The streets of the city are transformed into a liberating walkway. When by chance they meet – face to face, body to body – they mirror each other in silence, offering comfort, safety.
The film follows Will Fletcher, a musician, and Eve Fisher, who works in a pub where he is performing, during one night in London. After Will has saved Eve from a drunken customer at closing time, they stay up all night together, meandering through the streets of London and forging a relationship. Next morning, Eve takes him to see her Alzheimer's-suffering grandmother. The film is often compared to Richard Linklater's films "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset", as the style is very similar.
