Den 26. november 1956 ankommer Fidel Castro og 80 andre oprørere med båd til Cuba. Blandt disse er den argentinske læge Ernesto 'Che' Guevara, der ligesom Castro drømmer om at styrte diktatoren Fulgencio Batista. Che beviser under de efterfølgende kamphandlinger, at han er en ekspert i guerillakrig. Han stiger hurtigt i graderne i oprørshæren, og snart er han en revolutionshelt blandt de lokale cubanere.

Pedro, an old farmer, discovers that the land he cultivates is being sold to an American company. A student sees his friends attacked by the police while they distribute leaflets supporting Fidel Castro. Finally, a peasant family is threatened by Batista's army.

An American professional gambler named Jack Weil decides to visit Havana, Cuba to gamble. On the boat to Havana, he meets Roberta Duran, the wife of a revolutionary, Arturo. Shortly after their arrival, Arturo is taken away by the secret police, and Roberta is captured and tortured. Jack frees her, but she continues to support the revolution.

John Forsythe spiller en amerikansk CIA agent, som hyrer en fransk detektiv ved navn Deveraux til at tage til Cuba og undersøge rygter om russiske missiler og en NATO-spion ved navn Topaz. I Havana bliver Devereauxs undersøgelser farlige og efterlader sig en bølge af rystede regeringer, mord, forræderi og selvmord. Da hans mission er afsluttet, vender Devereaux tilbage til Frankrig, men da han går ind for at afsløre dobbeltagenten, stiger faren og spændingen til et hjertebankende klimaks i denne overdådige, internationale thriller.

Cuba, 1959: Batistas korrupte regering står for fald, og derfor hyrer den lejesoldaten Robert Dapes, en britisk eks-major, som skal berede troperne på at nedkæmpe de revolutionære kræfter. Dapes er udmærket klar over, at opgaven er håbløs, men han bliver alligevel hængende i Havana, da han render på sin gamle flamme, Alexandra, som nu er gift med en aristokratisk playboy.

Cuba, Havanna i 1958. Den 18-årige Katey Millers far får job i Havanna, og de flytter derfor dertil. Forældrene ser gerne at Katey holder sig til de andre rige amerikanske teenagere i byen, men Katey tiltrækkes mere af den indfødte tjener Javier. Javier er en meget talentfuld danser og Katey overtaler ham til, at de skal stille op som par i en prestigefuld dansekonkurrence. Derfor må de mødes i smug og øve de "forbudte trin". Samtidig med at deres følelser for hinanden vokser, rykker den cubanske revolution nærmere…

Den brasilianske instruktør Walter Salles har før gjort sig meget positivt bemærket med film som Central Station og Behind the Sun. Denne gang er emnet den 23-årige medicinstuderende Ernesto "Che" Guevara og hans kammerat Alberto Granados motorcykelrejse gennem Sydamerika i 1950’erne. Manuskriptet bygger på de unges egne dagbøger.

Filmen er baseret på den cubanske digter Reinaldo Arenas' chokerende memoirer. Han vokser op på landet under ekstremt fattige kår, men som teenager tændes håbet, da han får kontakt med revolutionshæren, der som en flodbølge fejer hen over landet. Jubeldagene efter Castros magtovertagelse er hurtigt overstået. Snart mærker han på egen krop, at det nye kommunistiske regime ingen tolerance har over for afvigere og anderledes tænkende.
