Den 26. november 1956 ankommer Fidel Castro og 80 andre oprørere med båd til Cuba. Blandt disse er den argentinske læge Ernesto 'Che' Guevara, der ligesom Castro drømmer om at styrte diktatoren Fulgencio Batista. Samtidig med at deres følelser for hinanden vokser, rykker den cubanske revolution nærmere…
Den brasilianske instruktør Walter Salles har før gjort sig meget positivt bemærket med film som Central Station og Behind the Sun. Denne gang er emnet den 23-årige medicinstuderende Ernesto "Che" Guevara og hans kammerat Alberto Granados motorcykelrejse gennem Sydamerika i 1950’erne. Manuskriptet bygger på de unges egne dagbøger.
Filmen er baseret på den cubanske digter Reinaldo Arenas' chokerende memoirer. Han vokser op på landet under ekstremt fattige kår, men som teenager tændes håbet, da han får kontakt med revolutionshæren, der som en flodbølge fejer hen over landet. Jubeldagene efter Castros magtovertagelse er hurtigt overstået. Snart mærker han på egen krop, at det nye kommunistiske regime ingen tolerance har over for afvigere og anderledes tænkende.
