午夜时分，在一条幽静的小巷里，乔尼边走边数着刚刚赌博赢来的钱，突然一把枪顶在了他的腰上，没等乔尼转身，持枪人重重地倒在了地上，杀死他的是一个穿黑风衣的男人，他告诉乔尼有兴趣的话可以到城边上的赌场玩玩。黑衣人就是那家赌场的老板叫巴利，为了答谢他的救命之恩，乔尼决定留在赌场为他工作。巴利从外面娶回一个叫吉尔达的女人，但他并不知道吉尔达是乔尼的前女友。几年前，乔尼没有任何理由便抛弃了她，从此吉尔达对他充满了痛恨。看得出巴利很爱吉尔达，于是乔尼隐瞒了这件事。可达吉尔为了报复乔尼，总是故意当着他的面向别的男人卖弄风情，还时常夜不归宿。为了维护巴利，乔尼不断警告吉尔达收敛些，可巴利还是看出了什么。一天巴利告诉乔尼自己是一家非法垄断组织的成员，如果有一天自己出事了，希望他能照顾吉尔达并继续自己的生意。几天后，在警察的追捕中，巴利逃跑时乘坐的飞机坠入大海，无人生还。吉尔达继承了他的全部财产，在她的恳求下，乔尼重新接受了她，可他禁止达吉尔达跟任何男人接触。无发忍受的吉尔达多次尝试逃走，可每次都被乔尼抓了回去。警察很快盯上了乔尼，并以非法经营赌场为由逮捕了他，逼他说出垄断组织的其他成员。就在这时，巴利突然出现了，原来他只是假死，由此来为自己争取时间，完成一桩大买卖。
