1995, Detroit, USA. Jimmy Smith Jr bor i en trailer sammen med sin mor og arbejder på en fabrik. Året er 1995 og Jimmy udtrykker sine frustrationer, frygt og vrede som rapper på byens hip hop-scene. Musik hjælper samtidig Jimmy i hans søgen efter identitet og en mening med tilværelsen. Det store spørgsmål er om Jimmy kan bruge sin musik til at opfylde sin drøm om at forlade sin triste baggrund og får anerkendelse udenfor bygrænsen, der også er kendt som ’8 Mile’.
