Gert, der er enlig og ikke selv har familie, tager imod opgaven med stolthed. Hun er idealistisk og ambitiøs og brænder for at hjælpe Grønland ud af armoden. Midlet er at skole og danne de 16 børn i det danske sprog og den danske kultur, så børnene kan danne fortrop for resten af Grønlands omvending fra fattigt jægersamfund til en ligeværdig del af Danmark. I sin blinde tro på eksperimentet, undervurderer hun børnenes åbenlyse personlige omkostninger.
