La population de la petite ville du Nouveau Mexique, Piedmont, est entièrement décimée suite au crash d’un mystérieux satellite. Seuls un vieillard et un nouveau-né ont tout de même survécu à l’attaque. Face à cet étrange phénomène, une équipe de scientifiques se rend sur place afin d’étudier les raisons de cette épidémie. Mais ces derniers découvrent qu’il s’agit d’un virus extraterrestre, prêt à se propager sur toute la Terre..
Le professeur Kelp est un professeur de chimie, très maladroit. Ses cours sont plus distrayants qu'instructifs. Secrètement, il prépare un élixir grâce à lequel il se transforme en crooner séduisant, sûr de lui, répondant au nom de Buddy Love. Ce double n'a pas la gentillesse, ni les bonnes manières du professeur. Très vite, ce dernier a du mal à le maîtriser.
Le professeur Tournesol vient de publier un livre sur la faim dans le monde et lance un appel aux savants du monde pour l'aider à la combattre. Son confrère espagnol, Anténor Zallaméa, lui expédie un paquet contenant une orange bleue, variété qui pourrait croître sur un sol désertique. Dans la nuit, l'orange est volée au château de Moulinsart. Le lendemain, Tournesol, Tintin et le Capitaine Haddock partent en Espagne retrouver Zallaméa, mais le savant a été enlevé, et peu après Tournesol se fait kidnapper à son tour. Avec l'aide d'une bande d'enfants, Tintin et Haddock libèreront les deux savants, séquestrés par un émir voulant s'approprier la découverte.
