Egentlig er Malcom gangster, men under et fængselsophold opdager han Islam og begynder at tale om rettigheder for sorte i et racistisk USA. Efterhånden bliver den karismatiske ex-fange kendt som Malcom X, en leder i det store samfund og en forkæmper for borgerrettigheder for alle uanset hudfarve. Men både blandt kristne og muslimer har Malcom mange fjender.

Alabama i USA, 1965. En gruppe sorte aktivister, anført af baptistpræsten Martin Luther King jr., arrangerer en borgerrettighedsmarch i den lille by Selma. Men delstatens racistiske senator, George Wallace, har bestemt ikke tænkt sig at lade de sorte bruge deres stemmeret. Demonstranterne møder kraftig modstand fra de lokale myndigheder, der ikke viger tilbage for at tage voldelige metoder i brug.

I 1979 skrev den amerikanske forfatter James Baldwin (1924-87) et brev til sin forlægger, hvor han beskrev sit næste projekt, Husk dette hus', der skulle fortælle USA's historie gennem tre af hans myrdede venners liv, Medgar Evers, Malmcolm X og Martin Luther King. Bogen blev aldrig skrevet, men den haitianske instruktør Raoul Peck bruger det efterladte manuskript til med Baldwin's egne ord at fortælle en desværre sørgelig aktuel historie om USA's racistiske historie.

Lindum Svendsen er en rigtig led inspektør på en sort skole i provinsen i 1960'ernes Danmark. En dag kommer den nyuddannede og langhårede Freddie Svale til skolen som lærer. De to har bestemt ikke samme mening om pædagogik, og da Svendsen en dag mishandler eleven Fritz, bliver fronterne for alvor trukket op. Sammen med drengens forældre beslutter Svale at gøre op med inspektørens rædselsregime.

On April 4th, 1968 the day Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, Robert Kennedy was in the midst of a presidential campaign that was attempting to bridge racial and economic divisions. As word of the assassination spread, riots and fires erupted in cities across the nation. Urged to cancel a rally before a mixed crowd in the inner city of Indianapolis, Robert Kennedy refused. The threat of violence was very real. But the few, simple words he spoke that night are credited with creating a sense of calm that settled over those neighborhoods during chaotic days following Dr. King’s death.
