서기 3000년. 타임 워프 기술과 우주여행이 일상화 된 미래세계. 1000년의 압축냉동형을 받은 극악한 마피아 보스인 돈 도르네로가 자신의 부하들과 함께 도주하는 사건이 발생한다. 시간범죄를 담당하는 시간 관리국의 특수부대 '타임레인저'는 이 뒤를 쫓아 출동을 하지만, 함께 출동한 류야 대장은 본인이 아닌 그 모습으로 변신한 도르네로의 부하 리라였다. 도르네로의 책략에 의해 압축냉동된 형무소가 통째로 20세기로 날아가게 되고, 그에 휩쓸려 4명의 타임레인저들도 함께 과거로 가게 된다. 20세기 일본에 도착한 타임레인저 앞에 류야 대장과 똑같이 생긴 청년 '아사미 타츠야'가 나타나고, 류야로 오인한 타임레인저와 트러블을 빚는다. 그 와중 도르네로 일당이 도시를 침략하고 타임레인저는 그들을 막기 위해 출동하지만 '5명이 한팀'이 만들어지지 않으면 변신장치를 사용할 수 없어 고전을 빚는다. 그때 함께 있던 타츠야를 강제로 '타임레드'로 변신시켜 한명의 범죄자를 검거하는데 성공. 얼떨결에 합류하게 된 타츠야지만 '자신의 운명은 자신이 정한다'는 의지로 타임레인저로써 활동하기로 결심한다.
