Sein knapper Sieg gegen die russische Kampfmaschine Ivan Drago hat Box-Weltmeister Rocky Balboa eine schwere Hirnschädigung gekostet, die ihn zum Rücktritt zwingt. Aber es kommt noch schlimmer: Durch eine Fehlspekulation seines Steuerberaters ist er plötzlich mit einem Schlag pleite.
