Lidstvo si zatím krátí čekání na světlé zítřky osidlováním Sluneční soustavy, k čemuž mu pomáhají obří teleporty umístěné na oběžných drahách. Éra kolonizace vesmíru ovšem víc než co jiného připomíná divoký západ s meziplanetárními bandity, smrtícími kráskami a pistolníky s přesnou muškou. Tímto světem líně proplouvá kosmická loď Cowboy Bebop, jejíž posádku tvoří věhlasná parta nejdrsnějších lovců odměn - bezstarostný dlouhán Spike Spiegel, ostřílený bývalý polda Jet, kráska s temnou minulostí Faye Valentine, nezletilá hackerka Ed a inteligentní pes Ein.

Na začátku to bylo jen obyčejnou koulí energie, nesmrtelným něčím, vyslaným na Zem bez jakýchkoli emocí či identity, ovšem nadané schopností proměnit se v cokoli jiného, pokud to dostane dostatečně silný impuls. Jako první to na sebe vzalo podobu obyčejného kamene, ovšem jak teplota klesala a ostatní kameny se drolily a v prasklinkách začal růst mech, tak to na sebe vzalo podobu mechu. Když se však osamělý a raněný vlk rozhodl na měkkém mechu naposledy vydechnout, tak se to náhle stalo vlkem. Konečně to získalo vědomí a pustilo se skrz zamrzlou tundrou, až to potkalo mladého chlapce. Ten žil v opuštěném městě, ze kterého odešli všichni dospělí za vidinou nádherného a bohatého ráje mnohem dál na jihu. Chlapec byl však během jejich odchodu raněný, a tak nemohl jít s nimi, dokud se mu rána nezahojí, a proto zůstal ve vesnici pouze se stařešinami. Ti však nyní již všichni zemřeli, a tak ve vesnici byl pouze chlapec s vlkem, který se nečekaně vrátil z tundry. (Jeoffrey)
