Irma è una graziosa prostituta parigina, che trova l'amore vero incontrando Nestore, un poliziotto squattrinato; Irma però non vuole assolutamente abbandonare la "professione", infatti è per lei motivo di orgoglio poter mantenere Nestore con tutti gli agi possibili. Nestore non è contento di questa decisione e, per limitare l'attività professionale di Irma, si traveste da facoltoso lord, diventando presto il suo unico cliente. Per corrispondere quanto dovuto dal generoso Lord X però Nestore dovrà massacrarsi di lavoro notturno ai mercati generali delle Halles di Parigi. Quando però egli si accorge che la sua donna inizia ad innamorarsi del suo alter ego, decide di inscenare un finto suicidio per liberarsi della sua doppia personalità. L'equivoco genera un'indagine della polizia francese, che accusa Nestore di omicidio, condannandolo a 15 anni di carcere. Alla fine Nestore riuscirà ad evadere e, presentandosi nelle vesti di Lord X, dimostrerà così la sua innocenza e sposerà Irma.

There’s a chubby freelance writer who’s so obsessed with masturbating to the sound of his upstairs neighbors going at it that he forgets to deal with his own love life and when he finally does have sex he is immediately filled with self-loathing. The upstairs neighbor’s story then splits off like an amoeba: she’s an office lady seduced by a “talent scout” who is falling down the sex industry ladder, moving from hostess, to massage girl, to private karaoke attendant. The talent scout’s story then splits off and runs in its own direction, revealing the sorry state of this young pimp’s soul. From there, the movie takes more and more time to consider the lives of more and more characters until the entire Japanese sex industry is filled with the wailing of lost souls.

A member of the jieitai ("Self-Defense Force"; i.e. Japanese military) is on leave and finds a woman giving birth in a graveyard in the former Yoshiwara district. He takes her to an inn to gove birth, and stays on a few days as she recovers, but becomes fascinated with the strange people he meets there, particularly the owner, who visits a house in his courtyard every day to talk and give food to his mother. He says she is very sick and can't leave bed, but no one else has ever been inside or seen her.
