劇情敘述達摩傳揚佛教及將衣缽傳於二祖慧可的經歷。達摩因傳授武功和「二入四行」的禪法，對中國佛教有很大的影響。 　　達摩祖師原是南印度香至國三太子，高度智慧、心地善良。父王將王位傳給他而不是兩位哥哥，但父王病危時，大哥卻派人暗殺搶奪王位，三太子有感於人生名利猶若過眼雲煙，自願捨棄王位隨般多羅出家，令其兄深受感動，終於痛改前非。起初師父要達摩蓋自修室以表求佛之心，但這過程中不斷有考驗，後來才悟到佛在心中，師父便為達摩剃渡，更囑付達摩要等師父過世六十七年後才能到震旦(中國)弘法。轉眼數十年，香至國已由異見王接位，異見王對佛教心存歧見，大舉焚毀佛像燒燬廟宇，耶舍以佛法弘理開導異見王，異見王始知耶舍乃其三叔達摩之弟子，從此異見王亦向達摩追隨禪理。六十七年後正逢南北朝民不潦生、征戰頻繁，達摩來到震旦(中國)，此時梁武帝大行佛道，人民小康，東林寺奉旨招待，但因達摩與梁武帝溝通不良，便往北走來到少林寺，在千聖山山洞打坐一坐九年，在這當中有人甚至拿針戳入身，梁武帝也派人馬要強行帶回，但都不帶不走。 　　龍山寺有位神光和尚，夢到兔兒指引往南求法，路上真遇到兔兒，告訴他少林寺山洞有位不倒翁，他前去見達摩祖師在打坐，便跪在洞口三天三夜飽受風雪，求達摩為他安心，終感動達摩，他以斷臂來表求佛拜師決心，達摩賜予法號慧可，最後衣缽傳給慧可為「禪宗二祖」，交給他佛教最高法要四卷愣迦經。強盜闖入寺中強奪香火錢，達摩讓強盜用火射箭燒毀自己軀體終於得以感化他們，隨後復活，並將強身健體禪法流傳。達摩涅盤後，被人瞧見攜一隻草鞋西行，皇帝派人將棺木打開，果然只剩一腳草鞋，此時達摩已達高齡一百五十歲。
