　　谁也没想到，在第二天的电视直播里，霍华德竟然真的宣布说自己要在一周后的节目里自杀。这一失态举动引来媒体一片哗然，UBS电视网高层更是十分震怒，刚刚接管了UBS的美国通讯公司主席弗兰克·哈克特，在电视网主管们面前大发雷霆，然而敏锐的麦克尔却注意到，这个野心勃勃的新任总裁的矛头并非单纯指向霍华德，而是他负责的整个新闻部。最近一年，新闻部节目收视下降，亏损严重，弗兰克·哈克早就有心对其开刀。果然，在第二天上午的董事会上，弗兰克·哈克特擅自宣布将新闻部降级，麦克尔恼羞成怒，找到UBS原总裁尼尔森，然而已经没有实权的尼尔森对此也爱莫能助。

　　戴安娜·克里斯特森是UBS一位富有野心的年轻女制片人，她是一个工作狂，思维敏锐、遇事果断，且善于利用男人，她正在策划一个相当冒险的电视节目——利用恐怖分子（一伙自称革命者的武装无政府组织）自己拍摄的行动录像，作一个类似今天“真实电视”的系列暴力节目。她对“霍华德事件”非常感兴趣，发现可以加以利用，于是找来最近两天的收视率调查结果，去说服和自己关系暧昧的UBS主席弗兰克·哈克特。令人深感意外的是，霍华德“丧心病狂”的直播，意外造成收视率的直线上升，弗兰克·哈克特也觉得有利可图，于是决定支持此事。
