The Sounds of This City is a short documentary focusing on three musical performers and the struggles of pursuing a passion while dealing with everyday difficulties. The three subjects are varied by age and status as musicians, each performing at different levels and for different reasons. The three are also linked by the relation they have to the city of Lancaster with the student and lecturer attending Lancaster University and the local performer being born in the region and having a strong tie to the area’s nightlife and music scene.

Fowler collages together diverse material related to Jones including interviews, music and even found fragments from Jones' own experimental films to create a haphazard and intriguing portrayal of this maverick character.

He’s known as the godfather of ethiojazz, a unique blend of jazz, traditional Ethiopian music, latin, caribbean reggae and afrofunk. Born in 1943 in Jimma, Mulatu studied music not only in Ethiopia but also in UK and USA. In 2005 he contributed to the soundtrack of Jim Jarmusch’s film “Broken Flowers”, reaching a new public worldwide.
