בלש הסקוטלנד יארד (ג'וני דפ) חוקר משטרה המכור לאופיום, המתחקה אחר עקבותיו של ג'ק המרטש - אותו רוצח סדרתי, שביתר פרוצות באופן אכזרי, בלונדון של סוף המאה ה- 19, ושעד היום נטווים סיפורים וספקולציות אודות דמותו, שכן הוא לא נתפס. החוקר מתוודע אל זונה צעירה ויפה בשם מארי קלי (התר גארהם), המשמשת בין הייתר, מטרה עבור הרוצח המטורף. בין לבין מתעמת חוקר המשטרה עם הממונה עליו, עם מנתחים שהנם חשודים אפשריים, עם כנופיות רחוב וסרסורים, ועם משפחת המלוכה.

רוצח סדרתי שידוע בשם "הנוקם" מסתובב חופשי ברחובות לונדון, רוצח נשים בלונדיניות. לדירתם של מר וגברת באנטינג מגיע אורח מסתורי ומצהיר שהוא מחפש אחר חדרכ להשכרה. בתם של בני הזוג הינה דוגמנית בלונדינית שיוצאת עם אחד מהבלשים שעליהם הוטל למצוא את "הנוקם". הבלש הופך לקנאי כלפי הדייר החדש  ומתחיל לחשוד שהוא הוא, "הנוקם". דמותו של הדייר  מבוססת על דמותו של ג'ק המרטש
