本片描述二十二世紀一名電腦代號為尼歐的電腦駭客，他總是覺得世界一切都不對勁，但卻又說不出所以然來。常常在夢中、或電腦中都會有個聲音對他說話，讓他分不清真實與夢境的界限。直到他來到地下自由鬥士的組織，才真相大白。於是他和一群身懷絕技的鬥士，開始展開對抗控制全體人類的『電腦魔王』的使命……
楚門伯班(Jim Carrey 飾)從他呱呱落地開始的三十幾年以來，就是史上播映最久、最受歡迎的記錄片肥皂劇主角，他居住的理想小鎮-海景鎮是個超大的攝影棚，而他的親朋好友和他每天碰到的人全都是職業演員。他生命中的一舉一動分分秒秒都曝露在隱藏在各處的5000多架攝影機鏡頭前，這個攝影棚中唯一不知道有攝影機存在的人就是楚門。 全球上億觀眾每天注意著楚門的一舉一動，他自己卻絲毫不知。經過三十幾年後，由於一個天上掉下來的燈，楚門終於感到有點不對勁，當他發現自己像是玻璃缸裡的金魚時，他決定不計代價逃離海景鎮。 但是他必須面對「楚門的世界」的創始人、製作人兼導演克里斯托(Ed Harris 飾)，並且克服他內心最大的恐懼，才能突破藩籬，獲得自由。這部激勵人心、發人省思的黑色喜劇嘲諷了人類想觀看真實戲劇的希望，並顯示了現實與虛幻之間的界線有多容易遭人混淆。
