На почетку филма видимо 14 поротника који су управо присуствовали суђењу једног дечака за убиство свог оца и на којима остаје одлука, да ли да га прогласе кривим или невиним. Од тих 14 поротника два бивају сувишна па на крају остаје 12, који се повлаче у собу за поротнике и који треба у неких пар сати да донесу одлуку о судбини младог дечака, кога само видимо на почетку филма. Сви седају за сто и решавају да прво гласају како би видели како је ко опредељен, тј. да ли мисле да је оптужени крив или невин. Једанаесторо од дванаест поротника гласа да је оптужени крив, осим једног који гласа да је дечак невин. Када га остали питају зашто сматра да је дечак невин, он одговара да он није сигуран да је он невин али да мисли да би најбоље и најпоштеније било, да мало попричају и продискутују пре него што донесу одлуку да овог дечака пошаљу на електричну столицу.
