Citizen Kane on ensimmäinen Orson Wellesin ohjaama elokuva. Se perustuu löyhästi sanomalehtimagnaatti William Randolph Hearstin elämään. Tuotantovaiheessa elokuva tunnettiin koodinimellä RKO 281. Elokuvaa on esitetty Suomessa myös nimillä Kansalainen Kane, Citizen Kane – sensaatioiden mies ja Himo. Citizen Kane on toistuvasti valittu äänestyksissä maailman parhaaksi elokuvaksi. Muun muassa elokuvalehti Sight & Soundin vuonna 2002 järjestämässä äänestyksessä sekä elokuvakriitikot että -ohjaajat valitsivat Citizen Kanen elokuvahistorian parhaaksi elokuvaksi. Parhaan elokuvan Oscar elokuvan ilmestymisvuonna myönnettiin kuitenkin elokuvalle Vihreä oli laaksoni.
