Psal se rok 1916. Romanovci slavili 300 let své vlády matičce Rusi a na nádherném plese se loučila princezna Anastasia se svou babičkou Marií. Vtom se objevil odvržený carův mág, Rasputin, aby se pomstil celému rodu Romanovců. Přizval si na pomoc kouzla a čáry a uvrhl na celý rod kletbu. Pohromu přežila jen mladinká Anastasia. Když pak o mnoho let později opustila sirotčinec, neměla tušení, kdo vlastně ve skutečnosti je. To Dimitrij, pohledný mládenec, v ní poznal dokonalou dvojnici ztracené princezny a přemluvil ji, aby se s ním vydala do Paříže. Anastasia si pomalu začíná vzpomínat na svou minulost, do které patří i zlý Rasputin.
V Rusku se píše rok 1904 a car Mikuláš II. slaví narození jediného syna. Zároveň vede válku s Japonskem kvůli jejich nepřátelskému tažení Ruskem. Ruská velmoc je na pokraji zkázy. Carevna Alexandra, původem z Německa, matka princezen Anastasie, Marie, Tatiany a Olgy, se obrací na charismatického mnicha Rasputina, aby uzdravil jejího jediného nemocného syna. Mikuláš II. je přesvědčen o jemu Bohem daném právu vládnout, přesto se nestará o potřeby svého lidu a nedaří se mu zastavit hrozbu světové války. Po bizarní smrti Rasputina, který měl nad Alexandrou až děsivou moc, Mikuláš II. pod nátlakem ruského parlamentu v březnu 1917 abdikuje. V mocenském vakuu se Kerensky s Leninem snaží každý prosadit svou. Královská rodina je nakonec uvězněna Sověty a popravena.

Například v podobě dnes již běžně užívané „intelektuální montáže", díky níž se ze střetu dvou nesourodých obrazů skládá zcela nový význam. Tak je tu předseda Alexandr F. Kerenskij přirovnán k mechanickému pávovi. Kvůli velikášské výrobě i netradičnímu stylu („formalismu") nebude trvat dlouho a Ejzenštejn, podobně jako další členové tzv. sovětské montážní školy, upadne u straníků v nemilost...
