Andrew Neiman je devatenáctiletý jazzový bubeník, který sní o slávě, ale není si jistý tím, zda se jeho sny někdy naplní. Pronásledovaný neúspěšnou spisovatelskou kariérou svého otce je rozhodnutý vystoupat až na samotný vrchol nejprestižnější hudební konzervatoře. Jednoho večera na Andrewa, který právě cvičí na bicí, narazí Terence Fletcher, dirigent, proslavený svým učitelským talentem ve stejné míře jako svými nemilosrdnými praktikami. Ačkoliv si spolu toho večera příliš mnoho nesdělí, probudí Fletcher v Andrewovi touhu dosáhnout svého cíle. K Andrewovu překvapení dalšího dne Fletcher požádá o to, aby byl Andrew přidělen k jeho kapele. Tento jediný čin mladíkovi navždy změní život.
