Annie og Duncan har været et par gennem flere år, selvom de er meget forskellige. Hun arbejder på et museum, og han er lærer. De har ikke rigtig noget fælles længere, alligevel vælger de at rejse til USA, for at følge i Tucker Crowes fodspor. Det er mest Duncan, som er fan af Tucker Crowe og dyrker ham med stor lidenskab, og det selvom det er mange år siden han sidst har udgivet ny musik. Rejsen bliver på mange måder en øjenåbner, især for Annie, da det går op for hende hvor mange gode år hun har spildt på ingenting. Og da der pludselig kommer et nyt album, får Annie chancen for at vise sig fra en anden side. Når det drejer sig om Tucker, lever Duncan i en drømmeverden og har svært ved at skelne mellem virkelighed og drøm. Og da Annie og Duncan går hver til sit, udvikler historien sig i en helt uventet retning.

For to år siden mistede Hannah (Rebecca Hall) sin mand, der var musiker. Han nåede kun at indspille et eneste album inden sin død, og nu har denne plade nærmest fået kultstatus. Måske er det derfor, Hannah ikke helt har kunnet give slip på sit livs kærlighed. En dag dukker journalisten Andrew (Jason Sudeikis) op og begynder at grave i mandens død. Hannah må begynde at overveje, om det er på tide at holde op med at sørge og komme videre i livet.

Tim Robbins har både skrevet og instrueret denne film, hvori han også selv spiller titelrollen som den fascistiske senatorkandidat, der med hjælp fra sine musikalske talenter har lagt sig stærkt i spidsen foran sine modkandidater! Han har tilsyneladende alle de meninger, som vælgerne ønsker sig af deres nye senator, og de glemmer tydeligvis at stille spørgsmålstegn ved, om han nu også er, hvad han giver sig ud for at være! Han kaster sig over de stofproblemer, som enhver storby den dag i dag må slås med, og netop fordi narko er noget, alle kan vende sig imod, er der ingen, der tænker over, hvad denne herre ellers vil bruge sin indflydelse på. Da det kommer for dagens lys, at Roberts selv har været involveret i smugling og handel med stoffer, ser det hele pludselig ikke længere så lyst ud!

Instruktøren Christopher Guest har igen samlet holdet fra Best in Show og Waiting for Guffman for at fortælle historien om 60ernes folkemusikere, som efter deres tidligere managers død går på scenen igen for at give en koncert på New Yorks rådhus. Levy og Catherine O’Hara spiller Mitch og Mickey, som var folkemusikkens førende kærestepar, indtil de blev skilt. Trioen The Folksmen og vokalharmonigruppen The New Main Street Singers spilles af andre.
