Am Morgen des 21. März 1945 sind die Nonnen und die Schulkameraden Rigmor, Eva und Henry von der französischen Schule im Kopenhagener Stadtteil Fredriksberg bereit für den Start in den Schultag. Weit entfernt - auf der anderen Seite der Nordsee - bereiten sich britische Piloten der Royal Air Force auf eine entscheidende Mission zur Unterstützung der dänischen Widerstandsbewegung vor. Sie setzen Kurs auf das "Shell-Haus", dem Gestapo-Hauptquartier mitten in Kopenhagen. Im obersten Stockwerk haben die Deutschen 26 dänische Gefangene als menschliche Schutzschilde platziert. Der Angriff gelingt, aber nicht weit entfernt tritt eine Tragödie ein: Ein Flugzeug stürzt nahe der französischen Schule ab, und der Brand lässt einige der folgenden Bomber glauben, das Ziel liege unter der Rauchsäule.

Nach Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs melden sich alle drei zur Royal Canadian Air Force. McLean darf allerdings nur Piloten ausbilden, für Kampfeinsätze ist er schon zu alt. Da auch seine Disziplin sehr zu wünschen übrig lässt, wird er bald wieder entlassen. Als kurz darauf Piloten für eine Überführung kanadischer Bomber nach England fehlen, ist McLean jedoch wieder zur Stelle und startet zusammen mit seinem Freund Scrounger Harris als Navigator...
