Dogajanje postavljeno približno 200 let v prihodnost, ko je koloniziran dober del osončja, ki je sedaj razdeljeno v tri politične frakcije. Najmočnejša je seveda Zemlja, ki ima največ prebivalstva in je edini planet s pogoji za življenje. Največ bogastva ima Mars, kjer pa ljudje živijo pod kupolami, saj je vesoljska vojaška tekma požrla vire, ki so bili namenjeni teraformiranju planeta. Tretja sila so prebivalci asteroidnega pasu med Marsom in Jupitrom, kjer je poseljenih več asteroidov in par vesoljskih postaj. Nimajo večje politične moči ali orožja za množično uničenje in so razdeljeni v več frakcij, čeprav jih vse druži prezir do 'notranjih', t.j. vseh, ki živijo bližje Soncu od njih. Osrednja zgodba se odvija v vesolju, kjer spremljamo posadko vesoljske ladje Rocinante pod poveljstvom mladega in sprva zelo idealističnega kapitana Holdna ter inženirke Naomi, medtem ko na vesoljski postaji Ceres sledimo kriminalistu Millerju v iskanju pogrešane bogataševe hčere Julie Mao.
