En 1878, les éleveurs Tunston et McSween décident de s'établir dans une contrée du Nouveau-Mexique, mais se heurtent au grand propriétaire terrien Hatfield, qui veut demeurer maître de la région. Billy est tout dévoué à son sauveur et, quand ce dernier est tué en duel par Ballinger, l'un des hommes de main de Hatfield, Billy, secrètement amoureux de Claire, la veuve de Tunston, fait le serment de tuer tous ceux qui ont pris part à la lutte acharnée contre son ancien patron...
Billy the Kid (Buster Crabbe) et son copain Jeff (Dave O'Brien) aident leur ami Fuzzy Jones (Al St.John) à s'échapper de prison, et le trio se dirige vers Paradise Valley, où ils trouvent la Paradise Land Development Company, a couru par Matt Brawley (Glenn Strange) et Jack Saunders (Charles King), est un peu moins qu'honnête dans leurs relations avec les homesteaders. Ils conçoivent un plan pour provoquer une scission entre Brawley et Saunders.
This spaghetti western presents a fictitious version of the often filmed legend of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Billy becomes innocently an outlaw while protecting his mother, but then turns into a trigger happy killer. When he falls in love he tries with the help of Pat Garrett, a fatherly friend, to change back. However, circumstances force Billy to become violent again and it is Garrett who is credited with the killing.
Billy the Kid has been wrongfully arrested for robbing a train. In order to prove his innocence, the Kid breaks out of jail and hits the trail to search for the real robbers. Along the way, he discovers that an outlaw band has been impersonating upstanding ranchers.
When Sheriff Hanley sends for Billy and his pals, they arrive to find him murdered and Ed Slade temporary Sheriff.
Knowing the Army is arriving to establish a post. Doc Hagan and his gang and the crooked Sheriff are trying to drive the ranchers off the land. When the gang wound a rancher, the Doc finishes him off with his needle. Running from the law again, Billy and his pals arrive and take up the ranchers fight. But when Billy's pal Jeff is wounded, Fuzzy unknowningly takes him to Doc Hagan.
Fuyant à nouveau la loi, Billy, Fuzzy et Jeff se rendent au ranch de l'oncle de Jeff pour trouver une autre famille vivant la leur. Ils apprennent bientôt le plan de Cobb Allen où il vend un ranch, s'assure que l'éleveur ne peut pas payer sa note, le met à la porte et revend le ranch. Mais Billy a un plan pour récupérer l'argent des éleveurs et il envoie Fuzzy en ville avec une fausse carte vers un trésor d'or.
Falsely accused of murder, Billy is able to escape thanks to his pals. Once in Santa Fe, he meets once again the man who lied during the trial.
Tom Carter, his wife and his son Billy, live quietly on the family farm until a dispute arises between him and his rich neighbour John Price who organizes a punitive expedition against Carter. Billy is sent to Littleton by his father and when he returns he finds the house burnt down, his father killed and his mother injured. Billy, Fuzzy, and Jeff are on the run from the law again. This time they travel to a new town where Fuzzy is made Marshal. But Hardy and his outlaw gang control the town and none of the previous Marshals survived for very long.
Marqué désormais comme "virtuose de la gâchette",Billy Le Kid décide de changer de vie. Accompagné par sa soeur, il se lance dans un long voyage pour rejoindre le ranch que tous deux ont acheté. Le voyage est pponctué par des rencontres sanglantes avec des tireurs qui le défient pour s'emparer de sa réputation et des hommes de loi impatients de débarrasser l'ouest de ce tueur dangereux.
