Bedarbis bulvarinių skaitalų rašytojas Holly Martinsas atvyksta į pokario Vieną, karą laimėjusių sąjungininkų suskirstytą į sektorius. Ten atsargų trūkumas išaukštino juodosios rinkos klestėjimą. Jis atvyksta pakviestas buvusio mokyklos draugo Hario Laimo, kuris jam pasiūlė darbą, tačiau sužino, kad Laimas neseniai žuvo eismo įvykyje. Kalbėdamasis su Laimo draugais ir bendraminčiais, Martinsas netrukus pastebi, kad kai kurios istorijos nenuoseklios, ir nusprendžia sužinoti, kas iš tikrųjų nutiko Hariui Laimui.

Tačiau ramiai Budistų vienuolyne gyvenantis stipruolis iš pradžių atsisako, o į Afganistaną išsiruošia tik tuomet, kai sužino, jog jo bičiulis pulkininkas pagrobtas ir atsidūrė sovietų nelaisvėje. Išvaduoti pulkininką iš mirties glėbio - Rembo garbės reikalas. Tai, ko negali padaryti vyriausybinės pajėgos ir slaptosios tarnybos, Džonui Rembo yra tik dar vienas gyvenimo iššūkis. Jo nekliudo nei kulkos, nei bombos, jis įveikia priešų klastą ir išvengia jam paspęstų spąstų. Sustabdyti Rembo negali niekas.

Successful surgeon Tomas leaves Prague for an operation, meets a young photographer named Tereza, and brings her back with him. Tereza is surprised to learn that Tomas is already having an affair with the bohemian Sabina, but when the Soviet invasion occurs, all three flee to Switzerland. Sabina begins an affair, Tom continues womanizing, and Tereza, disgusted, returns to Czechoslovakia. Realizing his mistake, Tomas decides to chase after her.
