Sandra, Samuel en hun slechtziende zoon Daniel wonen sinds een jaar in een afgelegen chalet in de Franse Alpen. Wanneer Samuel onder verdachte omstandigheden dood wordt aangetroffen, wordt Sandra aangeklaagd. Want was zijn val een noodlottig ongeluk, zelfmoord of is hij door zijn echtgenote geduwd? In de rechtszaak die volgt wordt hun relatie tot op de pijnlijkste details ontleedt.

De jaren 20. De Deense kunstenaar Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne) wordt door zijn vrouw Gerda benaderd om in vrouwenkleren te poseren wanneer een van haar modellen niet aanwezig is. Einar besluit later om als Lili Elbe door het leven te gaan en ondergaat daarbij een geslachtsverandering.
Twee koppels, buren van elkaar, vechten tegen het isolement en de ontberingen van hun omgeving aan de grens van de Amerikaanse oostkust in de negentiende eeuw. De Farels zijn een machtspaar: Jean is een prominente Franse expert en zijn vrouw Claire is een essayiste die bekend staat om haar radicale feminisme. Samen hebben ze een voorbeeldige zoon, Alexandre, die studeert aan een prestigieuze Amerikaanse universiteit. Tijdens een kort bezoek aan Parijs ontmoet Alexandre Mila, de dochter van de nieuwe partner van zijn moeder, en nodigt haar uit voor een feestje.
