I den fredelige by Dantes Peak frygter ingen af indbyggerne, at den store vulkan, der ligger tæt på byen, vil gå i udbrud. Men videnskabsmanden Harry Dalton, der er på besøg i den smukke by, kan fornemme, at noget er galt. Rigtigt galt. Byrådet vil ikke hjælpe, en redningsaktion koster for mange penge, siger de. Ingen vil høre på Harry Dalton udover den kvindelige borgmester. Men snart får de andet at lytte til. Lyden af eksploderende lava.

Efter et mindre jordskælv i Los Angeles dør syv undergrundsarbejdere af meget kraftige forbrændinger. Mike Roark er chef for byens katastrofeberedskab og tvivler på den officielle forklaring. Han får fat på et par geologer, hvis utrolige forklaring lyder, at der gemmer sig en vulkan under byen! Hvor svært Mike end har ved at tro geologerne, skal han snart få syn for sagen og samtidig blive sat på sin største opgave nogensinde.

Slaven Milo har forelsket sig i sin ejers datter, Cassia. Vi er i år 79, og snart skal Milo kæmpe som gladiator i Pompejis arena. Men vulkanen Vesuv er begyndt at rumle faretruende, og pludselig begynder den at spy brændende lava ud over byen. Nu må Milo forsøge at kæmpe sig vej ud af arenaen og redde Cassia - altimens det engang så storslåede Pompeji styrter i grus om ørerne på ham.

Skyfire udspiller sig på øen Tianhuo Island, hvor der ligger et luksuriøst feriested side om side med en aktiv vulkan! Rigmanden Jack Harris er hundred procent overbevist om at, der ikke er fare på færde, men den unge geolog Li er ikke så sikker. Naturligvis går vulkanen i udbrud og sprøjter lava overalt!
