Οι κινηματογραφιστές, κατασκευάζοντας ένα δικό τους τελείως πρωτότυπο εξοπλισμό, κατάφεραν να διεισδύσουν κυριολεκτικά στον κόσμο των μικροσκοπικών πλασμάτων ενός λιβαδιού, ανάγοντας τα ζωύφια τους σε αληθινούς κινηματογραφικούς χαρακτήρες.

Η προβληματική της σύγχρονης, κανονικοποιημένης ζωής αποτέλεσε ένα από τα πιο συχνά ερεθίσματα προς έκφραση και δημιουργία. Το 1982, ο Αμερικανός σκηνοθέτης Godfrey Reggio με παραγωγό τον Francis Ford Coppola δημιουργεί την ταινία Koyaanisqatsi, που θα αποτελέσει ιστορικά μία σπουδαία στιγμή για το ντοκιμαντέρ και τον πειραματικό κινηματογράφο.

Το δεύτερο μέρος του ντοκιμαντέρ αποτελεί μια έρευνα σε τεχνολογικά αναπτυγμένες χώρες και κατά πόσο έχουν επηρεαστεί από την μετάβαση στο δυτικό τρόπο ζωής. Powaq-Qatsi, oυσιαστικό από τη γλώσσα των Χόπι (powaq =μάγoς + qatsi =ζωή). «Mια ύπαρξη, ένας τρόπoς ζωής πoυ καταναλώνει τη ζωτική oρμή άλλων για να παρατείνει τη δική τoυ ζωή». Εστιάζεται στους ιθαγενείς του Τρίτου Κόσμου, στους αναδυόμενους τρόπους ζωής (στην Ασία, την Ινδία, την Αφρική, τη Μέση Ανατολή και τη Νότια Αμερική) όπως εκφράζονται μέσα από την εργασία και τις παραδόσεις. Thus, both cinema and radiography fall within the scopic regime inaugurated by modernity. The use of X-rays on two sculptures from the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum generates images that reveal certain elements of them that would otherwise be invisible to our eyes. These images, despite being generally created for technical or scientific purposes, seem to produce a certain form of 'photogénie': they lend the radiographed objects a new appearance that lies somewhere between the material and the ethereal, endowing them with a vaporous and spectral quality. It is not by chance that physics and phantasmagoria share the term 'spectrum' in their vocabulary.
