罗生门，日本京都的正南门。云游和尚、砍柴人和乞丐在城门底下避雨，三人闲聊，话题开始，故事的序幕拉开：一个武士和他妻子路过荒山，遭遇了不测。妻子被侮辱，而武士惨遭杀害。惨案如何酿成？凶手、妻子、借武士亡魂来做证的女巫，都各有说法。
平安时代的京都，罗城门外接连发生数起武士被杀的案件。坊间盛传武士夜过此门，总会看见一美女（太地喜和子 饰）独行，女子系妖怪所化，以美色诱人，趁武士不备害其性命。
平民出身的武士银时（中村吉右卫门 饰），受大将军赖光（佐藤庆 饰）之命前来平定妖怪。于罗城门外遇女妖，发现竟 是其家乡的妻子。银时随妻上山，更见到阔别多年的母亲（乙羽信子 饰）。银时懊恼自己误信传言，每晚前来与妻相会。第8日却不见妻子踪影，只母亲留在山上。至此银时方知母亲、妻子已非人类，妻子因动凡念被遣回魔界，而现在的母亲则成了充满怨念和复仇之心的妖怪……
源九郎义经被误颠覆朝野，为兄长追杀，日夜逃亡，四面楚歌，心情就如踏虎尾般战战兢兢。

The story, set in the Heian era, depicts the conflict between Korean painter Yoshihide (Nakadai) and his Japanese patron, the cruel and egotistical daimyo Horikawa (Nakamura). It is based on the 1918 short story Hell Screen by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa.
