Kyoto, au XIe siècle. Sous le portique d'un vieux temple en ruines, Rashômon, trois hommes s'abritent de la pluie. Les guerres et les famines font rage. Pourtant un jeune moine et un vieux bûcheron sont plus terrifiés encore par le procès auquel ils viennent d'assister. Ils sont si troublés qu'ils vont obliger le troisième voyageur à écouter le récit de ce procès : celui d'un célèbre bandit accusé d'avoir violé une jeune femme et tué son mari, un samouraï. Le drame a eu lieu dans la forêt à l'orée de laquelle est situé le portique de Rashômon. L'histoire est simple : Qui a tué le mari ? Le bandit Tajomaru, la femme, un bûcheron qui passait ou le mari lui-même qui se serait suicidé ? Autant d'hypothèses vraisemblables. Mais les dépositions des témoins devant le tribunal apportent à chaque fois une version différente du drame, et la vérité ne percera qu'après de nouvelles révélations surprenantes...

Une femme et sa belle fille sont violées et tuées par un groupe de samouraïs. Ivres de vengeance, elles renaissent sous la forme d'esprits chats et jurent de tuer tous les samouraïs. Jusqu'au jour où leur victime désignée est le fils de la femme, et donc mari de la jeune femme, revenu de la guerre.

Au XIIe siècle, les guerres de clans font rage au Japon. Le prince Yoshitsune est pourchassé par son frère aîné, jaloux de sa récente victoire sur le clan Heike. Yoshitsune prend la fuite, aidé par six fidèles vassaux déguisés en moines pour tromper leurs poursuivants. Mais avant de quitter le territoire, il leur faut traverser le poste-frontière d’Ataka, minutieusement gardé par les hommes de son frère…

Dans le Japon médiéval, le samouraï Tadamori gagne l'estime de la cour impériale en l'aidant à lutter contre les grands temples de Kyoto. Son fils Kiyomori, qui parvient à déjouer un complot dont il est l'objet, va se révolter contre la cour, qui méprise les hommes de guerre.

Sa mère étant morte alors qu’il était encore jeune, le Genji ne peut prétendre au trône et par conséquent, l’Empereur l’engage à fonder une nouvelle branche impériale. Au fil de l’œuvre, la vie du Genji oscille entre ses amours et ses ambitions politiques, la passion et la solitude. Charmeur et raffiné, il n’aura de cesse de façonner son idéal féminin.

The story, set in the Heian era, depicts the conflict between Korean painter Yoshihide (Nakadai) and his Japanese patron, the cruel and egotistical daimyo Horikawa (Nakamura). It is based on the 1918 short story Hell Screen by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa.

Based on the ancient Japanese Tale of Genji. This film is set in 900AD and tells the story of a famous female writer of the time, Murasaki Shikibu. Her story begins from the death of her husband, a Japanese noble, then moves on to her recruitment to train the Prince's young 'wives in waiting'. It is dotted throughout and actually composed mainly of one of the fictional stories she wrote, the tale of Genji. Genji is a rich playboy who falls in love and has a son to his stepmother. He falls in love often and has many wives whom are all completely subservient to him. Genji is played by a woman actress from the all-female Takarazuka theatre. The two interrelating stories are also interrupted occasionally by fantasimical musical clips from a past Japanese teen-idol, Seiko Matsuda.

In 1991, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of TBS' founding, it was released with a total production value of around 1.2 billion yen and aired in two parts.
