Amleth ser frem til sin fars hjemkomst, men da det viser sig, at den gamle vikingekonge er blevet såret på sit seneste togt, bliver Amleth inviet som arving. Ophøjelsen til kronprins er en stakket glæde, da kongens bror, Fjölnir, viser sig at være en forræder og kongemorder. Samtidig tages Amleths mor af den nye konge, og kun med nød og næppe når den yngre viking at undslippe. Nu planlægger Amleth en snedig og blodig hævn over manden, der har taget alt fra ham.
