Történetünk egy olyan világban játszódik, amelyben kifinomult hallással rendelkező szörnyetegek érkeztek a Földre. Csak azokat, akik a lehető legkevesebb zajt csapják, nem veszik észre az idegenek, és megmenthetik a bőrüket. Ez a történet pedig azt mutatja be, hogy csendesedett el a világ az első napokban.
Jack hangmérnökként dolgozik a filmgyárban, a munkája megszállottja. Egyik éjszaka mezei kirándulásra indul, hogy magnóra vegye a szél fütyülését egy készülő horrorfilmhez. Munkáját váratlan közjáték szakítja meg, egy közlekedési baleset szemtanúja lesz. Először autógumi kipukkanását hallja, majd látja, amint egy autó áttöri a híd korlátját és a mélybe zuhan. Jack a vízbe ugrik, és sikerül kimentenie a kocsi utasát, Sallyt, a fiatal lányt. A sofőr, a szépreményű elnökjelölt azonban halott. A rendőrségi vizsgálat szerint baleset történt, ám Jack rájön, hogy valójában merényletről van szó. Néhány embernek nem áll érdekében, hogy mindez kiderüljön.

Nem is sejti, hogy a fél galaxis átutazása gyerekjáték volt azokhoz a bonyodalmakhoz képest, amikkel egy ilyen feladat teljesítése jár. Mert becsajozni még egy földlakónak se mindig egyszerű. Hát még egy földönkívülinek. Nincs jó dumája, a modora csapnivaló, és ráadásul, ha izgatottá válik, a lába között valami bizarr dolog berregni kezd.
A film három különböző történetre oszlik, melyben ugyanazokkal az emberekkel találkozhatunk. A rab egy bajba jutott tévésztár történetét meséli el, aki házi őrizet alá kerül, és sajtóreferense valamint szomszédnője jelenti az egyetlen kapcsolatot számára a külvilággal. A Valóságshow egy félórás színfalak mögötti videóra emlékeztet, amelyben egy internetes reality show kulisszatitkaira kapunk rálátást. Végül a Tudás, melynek középpontjában egy elismert videójáték-designer és családja van, akiknek az autója lerobban egy erdő középen. Azonban a misztikus, csavaros és megdöbbentő események, azaz a film igazi lényegére a három rész összekapcsolása adja meg a választ.
