L'exécutif George Dupler perd son sang-froid et est rétrogradé au poste de directeur de nuit dans une pharmacie ouverte 24h / 24. Après avoir suggéré à son fils adolescent Freddie d'arrêter d'avoir une liaison avec la femme au foyer de banlieue Cheryl Gibbons, qui est une cousine éloignée, Cheryl tente de séduire George. Chez lui, devant sa mère, Freddie accuse son père d'avoir volé sa fille, car il a trouvé Cheryl en train de servir un repas à George au milieu de la nuit, alors que son mari Bobby était de garde à la caserne des pompiers. George se sépare alors de sa femme Helen, quitte son emploi, emménage dans un entrepôt et demande à Cheryl d'emménager avec lui.
Frank Taylor, un ouvrier, s'est fait prendre sa place par un immigrant polonais. Pour se venger des étrangers, il entre dans une secte, « la Légion noire », sorte de Klu Klux Klan dont les membres pillent, incendient et massacrent, souvent guidés par leurs rancunes personnelles. Taylor va même jusqu'à tuer son meilleur ami. Mais, pris de remords, il dénonce l'organisation et les coupables sont immédiatement appréhendés. Lui-même est condamné à la prison à vie.

Enrico, former lover of Serafina, interrupts constantly the wedding night showing on several disguises and calling at Pistacchio's drugstore by ringing the night bell, asking the unfortunate groom a preposterous list of prescriptions.
